OLD MARKET ASSEMBLY
The team behind The Canteen & Number 1 Harbourside approached Willow Works in early 2015 to discuss their ambitious project that involved renovating a former bank into their new business venture - “The Old Market Assembly”. We had a few months of planning as we had a limited timescale as the refurbishment work had to be completed ready for “The Wardrobe Theatre’s” Christmas (sell out) show. We encountered a few difficult challenges in our short 18 weeks onsite, mostly due to the way the building was constructed – very strong! We also had some challenging issues surrounding building control & fire safety as the building was fairly un-flexible, which we managed to resolve.
The kitchen was to be located in the former bank vault and to make the opening for the serve over entailed cutting through a 50cm deep reinforced concrete wall! We kept our changes as sympathetic to the existing palette of materials, with the aim of blending in the new additions with the existing building. The mahogany floor on the mezzanine came from a girls school in Birmingham and took nearly 3 weeks to lay, but feels like it has always been there. We laid over 280m2 of slate flooring throughout the building to tie the ground floor together and offer some cohesion. Very much a design & build project, we worked closely with Mathew Pike who was the driving force behind the interior design. The project was rewarding and offered us a great showcase for our work – we’d recommend a visit sometime!
